Today marks 21 days. So far I haven’t gone mad and although there have been some bad days, on the whole I think I’m managing fairly well on my own.
My day whizzed by yesterday. The night before last my neighbours reminded me that this week is Semana Santa (how did that already happen?) and that the supermarkets would be closed from Thursday onwards. I decided it would be better to go to the supermarket yesterday than wait til after the weekend when there would probably be even more people. Going outside two days in a row felt rather sneaky! But it was the most beautiful morning – my favourite type of weather, still a little bit chilly that you’re not too hot but warm enough that you could stay outside for hours (if only). And what joy I had upon entering the shop and finding everything I wanted (honestly it was mostly just a desire for Greek yogurt, my obsession with it continues. But seriously, it’s the little things that make me happiest and this quarantine just reaffirms that). I also figured I should try to redeem myself at the panadería (supporting a small business and my desire for more croissants is a win win). I felt pretty proud of myself when I managed to give her the exact change without spilling it everywhere and not looking like a complete mess. Wearing my lentillas (not my lentejas) helped in that regard.
The rest of the afternoon was then spent on various phone calls, some of which were extremely entertaining. It was almost as though I was hopping from tapas bar to tapas bar; switching from rum and peach juice (of which you can’t have just one) to celebrate a birthday on Zoom, to vino with my neighbours who left another bottle at my door and then rushing off (2 metres away) to dinner on Skype. The balcony chats are becoming more entertaining as we find absolutely anything and nothing to marvel at (the lampposts being turned on is cause for celebration). But even though we aren’t solving the world’s problems, chatting to real human beings and not screens does wonders for the mood. And as I was writing this Rafa started shouting from his balcony that he wants a divorce (they aren’t married and it was definitely in jest) so we all just had a few minutes of laughter and chat in the sunshine.
And while the sun is still streaming through I’m going to sunbathe and carry on with my book…
